Proven Operations

Stony Brook Unit 3 represents an expansion of existing generating facilities at the MMWEC's Stony Brook Energy Center site. Currently, MMWEC operates two other units with a generating capacity of 527 megawatts at this site.

The Stony Brook site already has natural gas, oil and water pipelines as well as the electric transmission facilities and other infrastructure needed to support the new unit. This is part of the proven infrastructure that makes the Unit 3 project so promising.

Recognized excellence in operational safety

Accident-free operation of the Stony Brook Power Plant during 2009 has earned MMWEC a National Safety Council award and recognition in the Safety Awards of Excellence program sponsored by the American Public Power Association.

The Stony Brook plant has completed 7 years without a lost-time accident, a record that reflects the high priority placed on safety in operating and maintaining Stony Brook facilities.

In naming Stony Brook a "Pacesetter Plant" in 2010, the Combined Cycle Journal cited MMWEC's role as an industry leader in retaining plant value through technological upgrades and innovative maintenance practices that address changing market conditions.
