Stony Brook Unit 3: stable costs, lower risk

The long-term energy resource needs of Massachusetts municipal utilities are too important to be left entirely to the spot market for energy and its volatile price fluctuations, as municipal utilities require stable, predictable prices to effectively manage electricity costs. Stony Brook Unit 3, a partnership of public power utilities, is a practical solution that can help strengthen long-term power supply portfolios.

Viable by design - and in practice

In its ongoing analyses of electric power requirements, MMWEC reviews various plant technologies, fuel types, and locations, as well as potential contracts and ownership in existing or proposed plants. The results clearly show Stony Brook Unit 3 to be an economic, efficient, and practical long-term alternative. This is due in large part to MMWEC's existing resources, including in-place infrastructure as well as expertise in finance and plant operations.

An independent analysis of alternative sites ranked the Stony Brook site as the best of four sites considered for a new generation facility. The future need for significant quantities of baseload generating resources is real. And Unit 3 is a real solution.

Established in 1969, MMWEC is the official Joint Action Agency for Massachusetts municipal utilities. It was granted unique legal powers in 1975 to bring a competitive edge to the effort to provide low-cost and reliable electricity to municipal utility consumers. Stony Brook Unit 3 is a key resource option as we plan, develop and manage energy resources in an evolving marketplace.
